2017

Twenty Seventeen…

Fires Burning, Draw nearer…

Telling stories and singing songs around a campfire.

In 2017 I became obsessed with Girl Guides!

It all began at the antique mall when I was looking for inspiration for my Painting Class and came across a guides doll. A friendship prop that would be passed around the troop from week to week with an accompanying notebook. Every wednesday, a different kid would take the doll home and write about their adventures with it. At the end of the year the journal would be read aloud while we all sat crosslegged a circle and wondered if the plot of Toy Story carried any factual basis.

I was encouraged by Jesse Thomas to pursue a research grant to fund this project So I wrote up a research/creation grant, proposing to look into team building activities, and its role in fostering empathy.

The project was accepted, and I subsequently travelled to the National Guiding Archives in Toronto where I spent 2 days digging through books and boxes. I spent the following summer painting in the studio at the University of Alberta.

This project was funded by the Roger S. Smith Undergraduate Researcher award through the University of Alberta.
